Patchwork & Quilting Workshop

I was invited to facilitate a Patchwork & Quilting workshop by Pustaka Miri as part of free public education program. They've been looking for someone to volunteer to teach P&Q since 2006 and when they discovered this blog, they decided to try their luck. I happily accepted unconditionally.

The Quilt Arrived in Holand

Sheh Hwa has arrived in Holand few months back & she sent me the above photos to show where she proudly displayed the quilt I made for her. Although it was made to hang above her bed, the quilt fits well in her dining room of her new rented house. This is what she said to me in her email "I am sending you the photos of the wonderful quilt pattern you made for me. I have hung it in my dining room in my house over here as there is a wall just suited for it. Wanted to show off your work as well! My husband looks at it and is much appreciated at the work that went into it by you".

Jewels in My Garden

Finally I made this quilt after promising Sheh Hwa for 2 years. She wanted to hang it above her bed but at the end I only managed to complete it before she move to Holand. It took me a month from start to the end but I only had weekends to do it. Sheh Hwa chose the design & color from my book "Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt Patterns". Seems that she is my only customer so far but charged at cost with free labour. Don't think I will make for anyone again. So SH can consider herself lucky..... hehe.

The Women Network threw a farewell party for SH at my house in Mar'09, as SH was leaving for Netherlands. Apart from enjoying the sumptuous foods we did a surprise farewell shower - everyone to buy small gifts for her. The above three items were from me which she can easily carry to Holand. The two items have matching strawberry design.

I bought this from a shopping mall's exhibition in my hometown. This is a product of China and the price is so much cheaper if I were to make this myself, not to compare the quality of the materials and workmanship.

Baby's Quilt for Baby Sophia

I hope by the time I post this, Gladys has received this quilt already. Gladys is in Adelaide, Australia & I sent it to her through a friend who happened to visit her son recently. I made this as a gift for her first baby whom by now could be almost one year old. It took me so long to complete it and I hope that the quilt will not be too small for her baby girl by now.

The quilt has embroidery blocks on a plain yellow material and alternately arranged with yellow print material which I quilted with machine motif. I made the quilt quite thick and hence not managed to quilt the border with the machine. Hand quilt will take me perhaps another year to complete with my daily busy schedule so I decided to skip the step or else I will never get the quilt delivered! I hope Gladys likes it.....

Towel for Lela

Lela is returning to Indonesia, so I made her embroidery of Hibiscus (Malaysian national flower) on a towel. I hope she will always remember Malaysia and me when she looks at the towel. She has been staying with us for 3½ years and I feel sad that she is leaving as she has been very good to me.

Multi-Purpose Quilted Bag

This bag has simple checked patchwork on the outer and quilted mendearing pattern in the inside. I sewn handmade-like pattern on the patchwork joints and embroider initial "R" on the front. Cumulatively, in total it takes about 2 days to make this but I did it bit by bit at night after office hours when I was not too busy, so I only manage to complete it in two weeks. The size is 12 inches square with 3 inches width.

King Size Star Quilt

This is the biggest quilt I have made so far measuring 98 inch square to cover for a king size bed. It was 100% hand quilted and also handmade applique. It took me only a month to complete the top piece (i.e. the centre star and appliques) but two years to quilt...! It is really worth the effort if you can feel how beautiful it is.

Wall Hanging Mini Quilt : Bird House

This handmade mini quilt is embelished with decorative buttons and ribbons. I make the border & binding green to match my house color theme. You can see the quilting clearly : mendearing pattern in the centre background and diamond pattern in the border. The wood hanger is made by my hubby using a broom stick and door knobs.

Quilted Glass/Mug Coasters

I created this coaster design myself using my Bernina Embroidery Software Version 5. I used some leftover Batek material and sewn with Bernina embroidery module. It is so simple to make and only took me about 10 minutes to complete one. Both front & back sides are identical, so you can use whichever side up.

Quilted Troley Liners

See below, my plain stainless steel serving troley looks much nicer with troley liners. I love making small quilt pieces like this and playing with different type of machine quilting technique.

The flowers are appliqued using machine & resemble very much like a hand made. The bright blue background was quilted using Bernina BSR free motion technique.

The heart blocks are alternately applique and heart embroiderie designs with stippling background. The border is simply normal stitch design.

Embroidery designs are sewn in rows around the border and the background is quilted using quilting walking foot.

Lumbar Roll Applique

My friend SH had a back problem & undergone an operation to correct a slipped disc. Her therapist suggested her to use a lumbar roll to support her back whenever she sits. I learn that when I saw her using a lumbar roll in a taxi when we were travelling together on a business trip. The one she was using was quite plain & I thought it would be nice to make one for her as a gift. She was excited when I offered her & told me that the size of the lumbar roll must be according to prescription in Robin McKenzie book.......[2005 diary]

Simple Baby's Quilt

Hibiscus Cushion

Our Women Network threw a house-warming party today for our colleague Nurliza. I gave Nurliza this cushion as a gift which I made from white on white print American Cotton. The four corner patterns around the Hibiscus are made from variegated thread.

The women were enjoying Mee Jawa, chicken wing, my Cheesecake and Malati's special Fruit Punch... The free make-up session by Jeja from Busana was enjoyable too... We hope to see all the women turn up to office on the coming Monday with shadowed eyes.....hahaha! Oh, not forgetting of course Emily's professional nail polish...lots of fun on the day...

"Breakfast" Quilt

This quilt is named "Breakfast" from "Cups and Saucers" book by Maaike Bakker. I made this as a gift for Glenn's wife, Susanne. Glenn came from Australia who was assigned to work with me on a project for a short duration but in no time learned about my hobby. Susanne brought me a couple of patchwork & quilting books and some cotton materials when she visited the country. I thought this quilt would be nice to thank her in return.

Miniature quilt

I made this miniature wall quilt as a gift for Button Point, a Bernina agent and material supplier in the city. I went to the shop to buy material for binding but she was too excited & grabbed it right away, so I did not complete the binding part & only have a picture of the incomplete quilt.....hahaha.

My friend, Gladys understand how much I love this hobby and gave me many patchwork & quilting magazines. I made this for her when she left the company in 2003 and she is now in Adelaide, Australia. She still sent me some magazines occassionally and I am very grateful for her thoughts and friendship.

This quilt has multi purpose - cushion case, wall hanging or table mat. The border is a colorwash pattern which you will not notice of the small cuts & joints due to smart color blend.

I made this handbag for my youngest sister when she was still studying. As a student she likes her handbag simple and not too big. One side of the handbag has tulip applique and the other side a spiral patchwork pattern.

Dinosaur Quilt

This single-bed size quilt was made by my student, Entirra. (I gave free patchwork & quilting class to a group of colleague and she was one of them). The design is her own creativity with clever selection of materials. The trees and dinosaurs are appliqued to the background material. A colleague of hers is now the proud owner of this quilt.

Wall Hanging Quilt : My Big Red Heart

This patchwork is made up of hundreds of 1 inch square assorted materials joined up to form color wash background and a big heart in the centre. It was very challenging to ensure the right color tone so I came up with an idea to play with the color arrangement on a sticky board. Once I was happy with it, then only I started sewing the patches together. The sticky board was also helpful to ensure the small patches did not get blown away or missing accidentally.

Tray Liner

Another kitchen item herewith. I like making small projects like this because I can be sure it does not get abandoned mid way. This one use free motion quilting for the background with Bernina BSR and has a beautiful teapot embroidery in the centre. The binding material has matched teapot prints.

I was attracted to these cute quilted cases (for coins) when I visited my Bernina agent in KL. Kelvin gave me one free which I used as a sample to make one on my own. My son, Radhi somehow had a better idea to enlarge it for his pencil case.

Embroidery on T-shirts

I have embroidered many t-shirts so far but I forgot to snap photos and they were given away to friends and relatives. Here are few t-shirts that I manage to snap:

A. T-shirts for Ezruls's farewell

My three boys (their friends called them 3R) and their best friends, Farouk & Tareq wanted to give something to Ezrul who was moving to KL. I suggested to make a t-shirt with their names on it so that Ezrul will always remember them. I also made a badge with an initial E in the front. B. Here are my own t-shirts which are already worn out...hehehe

C. This traditional Malay blouse (called Baju Kedah) is for my mother. I never made any blouse before but I really wanted to make something for my mother so with trial & error. My mother does not like bright color so I chose light American Cotton with same tone embroidery. I mailed it to her & she wore the blouse immediately when she received it. She called me right away & told me that she was wearing it. I felt so good about it.

Embroidered Towels

It is very interesting to embroider on towels but specific technique must be followed to ensure good quality embroidery which is not sunk in the towel material. Herewith are some towels I have made for my family & friends as gifts.
A. Paired towels for my youngest sister, Syiqeen on her wedding

B. Sport towels for my hubby & sons with their respective favourite sport logo. Rizal does not like sport but he wants something he can use for his drama (he claims that dramas sweat him too, hehehe!)

C. Gifts for colleague
I was moving to another department, so made this to thank them for great support while I was working with them & most of all the friendship. They send me a lovely bouquet of flowers & I was surprised because I did not expect it. Alvin is my virtual team in Perth and he has resigned from the company this month. I wish him all the success in his new job and hope that his dream comes true. This one I made for my boss on his birthday last year from me & my hubby. Mike travels to many part of the world to cycle. He is the best boss I have so far so I felt that I should give him a surprise. He teased me a lot about my new toy (Bernina Artista200).

D. I made this for my friend from India who is working in Brunei & got married to a Brunei lady.

E. I was thinking romantically that my husband & I should have paired towels to symbolise our love. We have chosen male & female peacocks, beautiful birds which perfectly reflect our mind. However I have not managed to complete the border but I think they are not bad as it is.

Lovely Simple Stitch Cushion

I made this to play with stiches designs available on my Bernina Artista 200. I used variegated cotton thread and it is simply adorable. Size is cute 10 inch height.

My colleague Ai Lynn adores it so much that I thought it was a good idea to make one for her since she was leaving for Netherland. Here is the one I made for her: This is the front part which I used FSL embroidery heart design .
My friend, Siti of course deserve something from me when I bought Artista200. She was more creative & requested that I make one for her in round shape. My Bernina agent suggested for an accessory (don't know what it is called) which produced perfect circular stitch. Photo below is before I stuff the cushion.

Kitchen Shelve Liners

I started to venture into machine made quilts in 2006 when I finally decided to buy Bernina Artista 200. I started with small projects like kitchen shelve liners using cheaper cotton material and reserve my precious stock of expensive American Cotton for something I'm more confident to make. Here are the photos of my experimental pieces:

A. This one has huge machine embroidery in the centre which I made using Bernina Mega-Hoop with the quilted borders using embroidery function. The background of the centre piece is quilted using freemotion quilting special foot BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator).

B. Patched basket patten in the centre and machine quilted on the triangle shape around the basket squares and also borders.

C. This one has embroidery blocks in the centre:

Babies' Quilts

A colleague & my sister were pregnant at the same time many years ago. I managed to make babies' quilts for both of them just in time to hand in upon arrival of the babies. That took a lot of courage to do so given short period of time for handmade quilts.

This one is for Sue's baby girl in yellow which is Sue's favourite color. The photo is a bit blur - no digital camera yet in old years. I have modified the original colors in the book which are pink & white to cheerful colorful bunnies with yellow color theme. This one is for my niece Yana:

Wall Hanging Gift for Shareena

Many years back, a colleague was leaving for UK & my office colleague suggest that we make this for her farewell gift. I've got the pattern from my friend's magazine but I modified the color for Autumn tone to suit Shareena's favourite color. Size: 38 inches x 42 inches.

Single-bed Quilt for Boys

This one is for my eldest son, Rizal & it took me about a year to complete. The top part i.e. patchworks was completed in one week but handquilting part was quite slow especially my available time was limited to nights, weekends & public holidays only. It worths the effort - I made this in 2002 and until now it still looks good and very lasting. Size: 66 inches x 90 inches. I managed to make another one for my third son, Radhi but this was quilted using my Artista200. The applique pattern is from the book "Quilt for Girls & Boys" by Barbara Roberts. I have enlarged the pattern from the original size. The quilt finished size 64 inches x 86 inches. However, I have not made any for my second son, Rusydi eventhough I have bought some materials because we cannot decide on the pattern suitable for his concept. A temporary solution is to buy him a quilt cover from Aussino:

My First Two Handmade Quilts

My very first hand made quilt which I learnt from Rita. This one is called Pickles & Pattles. I don't know the name of the book because the book is not mine.
The centre piece is very difficult to make, using paper piecing technique. The challenge is to join up the arcs accurately to form a perfect circle. The border is applique and also not easy for new beginner due to small cuts and many overlapping colors but with deep passion it was finally completed and I am satisfied with the quality.

This one is Ohio Stars - simpler than my first piece. I decided to pick another piece to learn because the first one did not provide the basic patchwork cutting & joining patchworks. I picked a small size to ensure I did not give up on it before I manage to complete it. The border is a simple lovely heart shape which is handquilted on the piece. This piece sits proudly on my dining table for years until now.
